I truly believe a fitness routine which includes all aspects of physical fitness is essential for total body health. At one point it’s likely that we’ve all fallen into the trap of being an enthusiastic cardio queen or finding ourselves addicted to our gym’s weight machines.

Whether you’re in a steady relationship with the elliptical, or if leg days make your heart pitter-patter, you might notice your weight plateauing and you might not be reaching your fitness goals.

One of the biggest culprits in stalled weight loss is not incorporating enough variety into our exercise regimens.

I’ve been guilty of trying a new workout trend and then becoming completely obsessed with it. A few months down the road I realize that I burned myself out or I’m not as close to meeting my personal goals as I thought I’d be.

Vary Your Workouts

I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a few favorite moves that set you on fire, but for effective and long-term weight loss it’s really important to have plenty of variety. You wouldn’t just live on salad, would you?

Eating one type of food will help you shed pounds, but the long-term efficacy and health benefits are almost nil. The same goes for fitness, you can’t be completely fit without variety in your workout schedule.

Give Yoga A Try

This is where I tell people to give yoga a try. The beauty of yoga is how truly versatile the practice is.

Depending on the type of yoga you practice, you can get in your sweaty cardio (vinyasa flow), a leg day that makes your legs quiver (hatha) or simply work on stretching out your bunched-up muscles from a week of lifting weights (yin).

Have you seen the sculpted arms and shoulders on a person who does yoga regularly?

Talk about a gun show!

Obviously yoga builds impressive strength, but a steady practice reduces your stress and curbs cravings, while improving your digestion and metabolism.

There’s a reason why yogis often look relaxed, confident, and at-ease!
