It seems that everyone is trying to shed some belly fat, and there are countless schemes, diets, and tricks that claim to help with dropping the weight.
Yet, if they really worked, then wouldn’t everyone be doing them? Sometimes, the best thing you can do to lose belly fat is to stick to the simplicity of a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Belly Fat Is Normal, But Too Much Isn’t
Everyone – yes, everyone – has some amount of fat around their abdominal area. It’s normal, not to mention necessary, considering there are vital organs in that area that need nourishment and protection.
Yet lots of adults are walking around with an unhealthy amount of belly fat, which can decrease their lifespan, bring on disease, and limit their overall activity levels.
When there is too much belly fat around the organs (this is referred to as visceral fat), it can put added strain on your organs while contributing to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other illnesses.
While the amount of fat you carry partly depends on your genes, a lack of inactivity and a poor diet are major contributors.
So, how do you get rid of excess belly fat? Here are some realistic tips.
Getting a workout in doesn’t have to be a chore that you dread. It’s all about finding activities that you actually enjoy doing. If you hate running, then don’t run, but maybe you can go for daily walks, ride your bike, or go swimming.
Moreover, just because you have belly fat, that doesn’t mean that you need to do 1,000 crunches a day to get rid of it. In fact, that won’t work. Instead, you will want to do exercises that get your heart rate up and work up a sweat.
There are endless possibilities for this, from jumping jacks to dancing, to Hatha yoga. Even yard work or household chores can get your heart pumping, so be creative and remember that the key is to do activities that you like.
That way, you’ll be more likely to stick with it for the long term.
Eat to Support Your Body, Not Shrink it
Lots of people assume that if they want to drop some pounds, they need to deprive themselves of food. However, this will only send signals to your body that it needs to cling to every bite of food that you consume because it won’t be able to trust that you’ll give them nourishment again.
Instead of thinking about shrinking your body, focus instead on supporting it. This includes supporting gradual weight loss and stronger muscles.
Another tip is to not dwell on what you can’t eat, but on all of the things that you can eat. So, you’re not going to be eating pizza and donuts every day, so what? There are plenty of other things that can be part of your daily diet, and they’re just as delicious.
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, lean protein; all of these things can support a strong and healthy body – and yes, less belly fat.
Yet, if you’re only focusing on how you can’t eat fries when you’re really craving them, then you’re going to be miserable.
Cravings Oh My
Speaking of cravings, they’re usually trying to tell you something, and this can be a key to shedding belly fat for good. A salt craving could mean that you’re dehydrated, you have an electrolyte imbalance, or you’re stressed.
Craving sweets typically points to you’re stressed out or you’re eating too much sugar to begin with.
You might be going through hormonal changes or feeling highly emotional. When you tap into your feelings, you often find that your cravings are just a way of covering up some mental or emotional blockage.
