Jane Mukami

FFFC:  Please introduce yourself to our readers (i.e. your name, occupation, hobbies, etc.).

JM:  I’m Jane Mukami.  Was born and raised in Kenya currently living in the Atlanta, GA.  I’m an IT Consultant for a pharmaceutical company here in Atlanta but my real passion lies in health and fitness.  I enjoy working out, napping, and travelling.

FFFC:  What sparked your weight-loss transformation journey?

JM:  My weight loss journey began as a result of not liking what I saw in the mirror. I was by no means obese but with age, I noticed my clothes getting tighter, cellulite, bulging tummy etc. and these things were driving me insane. I wanted a better me and was not going to stop until I found her. This was in summer 2008.

FFFC:  What was your beginning and current weight or measurements?

JM:  Beginning weight was 127 Ibs I’m 5”1.

Before: Chest 35, Upper abs 27, lower abs 32, hips 41, thighs 24

After: chest 32 upper abs 24 lower abs 26, hips 35, thigh 21

FFFC:  How long did it take for your weight-loss transformation from beginning to end?

JM:  My journey began in summer 2008 but it wasn’t until I met my trainer in 2010 that I finally got the results I desired! It took 6 months of hard work with him to attain my dream look while I had wasted 2 years trying a lot of other different things.

FFFC:  What physical activities did you participate in during your journey?

JM:  Prior to meeting my trainer I had engaged in boot camp sessions, p90x, long distance running and even ran 2 ½ marathons  in less than an hour. I tried a lot of different detox programs; juicing diets even hydro colon therapy….I tried a lot of different things and even decided to have lipo. The lipo appt never happened because I met my trainer in the nick of time.  With my trainer new trainer it’s a combination of intense weight training, cardio and a clean eating plan

FFFC:  How did your eating habits change?

JM:  My eating habits have done a 360! I’m now very mindful of what I eat because I understand its importance.

  • I eat 6 or 7 meals a day every 2 hours starting 8am
  • I drink a lot of water about 1.5 -2 gallons a day
  • I consume carbohydrates in the earlier part of my day and never at night
  • My meals are primarily made up of lean meats, lots of fibrous carbs like lettuce, green beans, broccoli, spinach, slow digesting carbs like rice, sweet potatoes etc.
  • It’s not strange to find me having chicken and broccoli for breakfast

FFFC:  What is your favorite fitness activity?

JM:  I enjoy weight training and anything that works my legs maybe because I like having nice, tight sexy legs. Weighted lunges or the leg extension machine are my fav. I love how Leg workouts always leave me breathless…

FFFC:  What do you do now to maintain your physique?

JM:  Nutrition is usually the challenging part for me so when I’m off season it’s all about enjoying what I like to eat in moderation but still train and do cardio.

FFFC:  How did you develop and sustain the willpower to avoid the bad stuff (i.e. junk food, bad drinks, lack of activity, etc.)?

JM:  Fortunately, my taste buds and cravings have changed. I crave nuts, cranberries, fruit…the type of stuff that the average person wouldn’t consider ‘bad’.  I definitely cannot afford to succumb to cravings especially if I am getting ready for a photo shoot or a show. I usually talk myself out of it and never keep any junk in the house. If I’m not training for anything, I indulge in moderation but I’m mindful of the time of day as well.

FFFC:  What advice do you have for someone starting out on their weight-loss journey but unsure of how to begin?

JM:  My advice to anyone at the start line is that fitness is a gradual journey so start slow. Don’t make too many drastic changes at the same time because you will burn out.  Find a support system; people that understand your goal and will hold you accountable.  Have a goal in mind to keep you focused and motivated example: If I work out consistently for 90 days I will buy myself a pair of shoes

FFFC:  What do you think is the biggest misconception about this journey?

JM:  Most people think that once you reach your ideal weight/look the journey comes to an end. I was thought the same when I would start a diet + workout plan and halfway through stop and wonder why I didn’t get results.  Health + Fitness is a never ending journey. The same way your car gets serviced every x months for as long as you own it, is the same exact way you must ‘service’ your body for as long as you’re alive. You may slow down on working out and eating clean, but you should never stop.

FFFC:  How can readers learn more about your transformation and journey online (i.e. Facebook, Tumblr, twitter, etc.)?

JM:  I have a fitness blog www.fitkenyangirl.com  where I share a lot of information as well as my Facebook page facebook.com/fitkenyangirl
