Mason Jar Salads

Over in the Femme Fitale Fit Club group there is currently a discussion on the best way to pack and travel with green salad.  One of the members shared an awesome idea and while it may not be new to many of you, it is new to me and I love sharing what I consider great ideas so everyone can benefit.

One of our club members packs her salad in Mason jars.  Since the jar is airtight she pre-packs them on Sunday for the week and the salad keeps for at least 7 days in the fridge.  No wilting, no slime, no fuss.  The way you do this is, first you purchase wide-mouth Mason jars from Target, WalMart or online at Amazon.  After you have properly cleaned and dried them, the fun begins.

You place the dressing at the bottom of the jar, then place heart veggies on top of the dressing because you risk sliming out your lettuce greens if they sit on top of the dressing for an extended period of time due to the acidity in the dressing.  Next you pack on your protein and salad greens.  It is such a pretty picture, easy to transport and the salad stays fresh!

I was using the plastic Glad containers but found if I did not eat my salad right away – it wilts within 24 hours of being packed..so I am off to get me some Mason jars and work this out!  Do you have any innovative and creative ideas for packing and transporting salad?  Leave me a comment  – would love to learn new salad packing tricks.

LOVE this! I have travel packs of dressing, but what a great idea to put the salad into mason jars and just grab one and my packets of dressing! LOVE.

Cool that they can last as long as 7 days in the jars! To eat, do you simply empty them/does the dressing come out of the jar well?
