Building out your own home gym is an excellent option especially if you don’t have the funds or time to deal with annual gym contracts, other gym goers or no available gym equipment.  Here’s how to create your own gym space at home.

Regular box gyms tend to be too overcrowded (especially during certain times of the year), noisy, and filled with sweaty air and funky smells. If the thought of that turns you off, a great option is to build your own home gym!

There is nothing better than staying in your warm cozy home, and simply heading out to the garage or basement where you have created your own fitness sanctuary.

The Advantages

Creating a fitness area in your home might sound expensive at first, but in the long run, you will receive a return on your investment.  Here are some additional advantages:

  • Save money on gas because you won’t need to spend it on gas driving back and forth to the gym
  • Your home gym is yours, so you won’t have to share with strangers
  • Won’t have to worry about the gym’s availability or affordability
  • Unless you want to talk to yourself, there will be no distractions from talkative gym goers who like to socialize

  • You also won’t need to worry about strangers staring at you as you exercise or providing unsolicited comments form.

Those are some major advantages.  Now that you are bought in it’s time to determine where in your home the gym will be created.

Identify a Location

It’s all about location, location, location.  Now that you know the advantages of creating a home gym identify where it will be located.  Look for a nice empty space to build out into a home gym in your home, condo or apartment.

Good considerations include an unfinished area of the basement, a 2-car empty garage or near empty, least used room in the home or apartment.

Measure the space out to determine what, if any pieces of equipment would fit comfortably and still leave enough floor space to navigate throughout the room.

Make sure it is equipped with storage such as a closet, armoire, weight rack, or storage bin to keep things tidy to minimize trip hazards

Create Ambience in Your Home Gym

Now that you’ve identified a location in your home create ambience in your personal gym space:

  1. Television – a nice widescreen is perfect especially if you like to perform online instructed workouts, have Peloton Digital and participate in those workouts or perform workout programs found on YouTube
  2. Fan – a fan or multiple ones are needed in your home gym area to help keep the space cool and comfortable as you heat up from working out
  3. Speakers – adding quality speakers to your space will make you feel like you are in a professional gym setting and studio as you complete workouts you’re watching on your widescreen.
  4. Mirrors – since you won’t have a personal trainer to help correct your form, consider adding a tall standing mirror to your space so you can easily check your own form
  5. Surround your space with motivation by adding motivational quotes all around using vinyl lettering or hanging photos

Now you’re ready to move on to filling your space with workout equipment.

Home Gym Equipment

First things first, no home gym is complete without basic fitness and gym equipment.

Bear in mind, at the beginning you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on completing your home gym, but rather start small and slowly upgrade.

Look for cost-effective options to purchase equipment such as eBay, Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist for gently used equipment

Some initial accessories I highly recommend you acquire are rubber gym flooring mats (unless your space has carpet) and yoga mat.

After that, get a few dumbbells, and at least one kettlebell.   Many people also invest in a barbell with a few Olympic weights and consider it one of the most important things to have in a home gym.

Again, it depends on your available space.

Other useful pieces of equipment to include in a starter home gym are:

  • Stability ball
  • Jump rope
  • Workout bench

Consider adding cardio equipment to your personal gym space.  Treadmills have come a long way and have a bunch of amazing options and programs to help you take your fat burning to the next level.

An elliptical, recumbent bike or rower are other options you can add to your home gym.  Again, consider the location and size of the space.

Wrapping This Up

There are many advantages to creating a gym out of an area in your home.  Key items to pay attention to are location, ambience, and getting the right equipment for the space.

It will take time, money and effort to get all of the essential fitness equipment you know you will use but be patient and relish in the thought of the huge return on investment you will receive over time once you get active in your personal gym space.

You don’t have to have a gym membership to get in shape and with a little creativity and imagination you can create your own effective and functional fitness experience in your home.

    You are right. Home gym help anyone keep fit and healthy. Gyming is fun but going to the gym, not that fun. Rather, why not set up a gym at home? it could save you time as well as money. You know professonal gym costs a huge amount of money every month. You can set up a small home gym saving your gym membership cost. And guess what I have done it already.:D
