In The Gym with Patty Malcolm of Lala Raw

This is one interview I could not wait to post. She is amazing, RAWsome, beautiful, vegan and her energy comes through her posts and page. Her name is Patty Malcolm and she is a raw food expert.   I hope I have that right. I am sure she will correct me if I am using the incorrect term. I’m not trying to limit this great person with a label. Just trying to help all of you realize her area of expertise.

There are many facets to her being which also includes being an animal lover, so much so she is trekking to Thailand in 2013 to volunteer her time working with abused elephants.  How many people do you know who put their time where their mouth is?  Impressive!

She also helps to combat any ill-conceived thoughts about the abilities of individuals who live a vegan, high raw, or raw lifestyle.  She is training for her first 1/2 marathon for PETA and is raising money  (Team LALA RAW) for the cause.  If raw food gives someone that much energy..SIGN ME UP!  But wait..not too fast.  Let me slow down, pump breaks and take heed to her excellent advice in this interview as she talks about a way to transition to a raw food lifestyle and remain successful.  🙂

 FFFC: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

PM: Hello, my name is Patty Malcolm and I am living in Los Angeles where I am an actress, vegan, and raw foodist. I started a blog called lalaraw last year to share my passion for all things on the subjects of nutrition, natural healing, and living on a raw, vegan, plant-based diet.

FFFC: How did you get interested in the raw food lifestyle?

PM: It started young for me. At just 14 years old, I became a vegetarian and my first job was in a health food store and cafe where we served fresh juices, vegetarian soups, salads, and sandwiches. As I learned more, I progressed to a vegan diet and eventually to a high-raw, vegan diet.

FFFC: What prompted you to make this your career?

PM: I’ve always been passionate about helping people live a healthier life and have been giving nutritional advice since I was a teenager. I think it really shifted for me when my father passed away 11 years ago from heart disease.

FFFC: What do you like most about what you do?

PM: I love experimenting with food and how creative it can be. But, mostly, I love hearing the success stories from people who follow me. Knowing that I am helping people feel better, look better, and have better health is a really humbling honor. It makes all the hard work worth it!

FFFC: What is your most favorite aspect of your job?

PM: Inspiring people to live healthier lives. I think that so many people have given up on being healthy and it breaks my heart. It is never too late start living a healthier life.

FFFC: What do you consider the most useful bit of advice for those interested in changing over to a raw food lifestyle?

PM: Start by taking one step at a time. A lot of people fail because they go from a standard American diet to 100% raw overnight and this can be a difficult transition. The initial detox symptoms alone can stop people in their first week. So, start slow. Start by making a green smoothie for breakfast and having a hearty salad for lunch. Then, start cutting out processed foods. Eventually you will start to crave that green smoothie in the morning and that big salad at lunch and it will begin to change what you eat at dinner. You will start making better choices based on how your feeling… just don’t try to do it overnight.

FFFC: What do you think is the biggest misconception about being a raw foodist?

PM: That we are weak and don’t get enough protein. I am a long distance runner and also do cross-fit, yoga, hiking, spinning, weights. I’m not weak, I feel amazing. I’m run on veggie fuel… as do many top performing professional athletes.

FFFC: What general tips do you have for the average woman balancing family, career with health and fitness?

PM: Make time for yourself, even if it’s a half hour everyday to walk or run around the block. Stay out of the middle aisles at the grocery store. Stock your refrigerator with organic veggies and fruits that are easy to grab on the go. If I have a crazy busy day, I still throw down my yoga matt on the floor and do crunches while everyone is watching TV.

FFFC: Do you have any special events or new product launches our readers would be interested in?

PM: I am working on my first un-cook book and hoping for it be published in fall of 2013.
