Hi everybody. Checking in with my Five Friday topic “Off To The Races” which fits right in with my half marathon update. Last time I checked in I let you all know I had not done a hill of beans of training. That was for a few reasons including a bum knee and horrible Maryland weather with record amounts of snowfall. With all of that said – I still haven’t been training like I should.
Before I share my reasons for signing up for the Iron Girl Half Marathon let me shout out the wonderful hostesses for this weekly link up. This link up is sponsored by Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC, Cynthia from You Signed Up For What? and Mar from Mar on the Run! Their fitness and running blogs are awesome so make sure you head on over and check them out.
Here are my top 5 reasons why I signed up for the Iron Girl Half:
- It is on my daughter’s birthday, April 27th so I thought it would be cool if she saw me cross the finish line since I dedicated this race to her
- I never ran a half marathon before and this is going to be my first
- I registered with some friends and we are going to achieve this together. She is going for the triple crown.
- I want to be considered an Iron Girl myself even if I haven’t completed one of their traithlons
- I think it will just be COOL BEANS to be able to tell folks I completed a half marathon
Now there are some rumblings and questions as to whether the race will take place now due to some financial trouble experienced by the hosting organization TriColumbia, but hopefully the race will go forward. If not, there are more than enough of other races to make up for this one so I won’t fret on that front. I will also get my butt up and out there running on the pavement again once this weather permanently breaks for the season.

I’m shocked the race may not take place. It’s such a big and well known event, there would be a lot to lose! You know I am with you on the weather. My half is on 3/30 and my training has suffered because of the weather. I know, it’s just an excuse for someone who hates the treadmill! My advice: build up your mileage again slowly. It’s not worth the injury. If you have to walk a bit during the race, so what? In fact I have been using a run/walk method (20 second walk every 2 miles, my own random method) and it seems to work for my legs.

Thanks Michelle. I just may try a variation of the run/walk method. I went to the gym this morning and got the weights and my knee felt fine. I am hopeful I am on the other side of this recovery.

Yay! Good luck on your first half!! It will be a wonderful experience. I remember my first one, even though it was miserable while I was running it but, once I crossed the finish line I broke out in tears and disbelief that I actually just ran 13.1 miles. It’s a great feeling!
There is a half that I am going to sign up for that is May 4th but haven’t registered yet. I will by tomorrow! This will be my 8th half !

I haven’t signed up for any races myself but I’ve been invited to a Fun Run for kids in Atlanta on April 27th that my daughters will be running a 1 mile race. They’re really excited about it.

That sounds cute. I did one with my daughter last September. Great bonding time.

Good luck on your first half! I’m planning on doing my first half in Richmond this Fall. I chose it because I was looking for something relatively close to the DC area in the Fall and Richmond was at just the right time. It also had a lot of good reviews and a generous pacing requirement.

I’ll be crossing my fingers that the race isn’t cancelled. There’s nothing like crossing the finish line of your first half marathon!

Thank you. I have both my fingers and toes crossed. LOL

I signed up for my first race of 2014 which happens to be today. I signed up for it because it’s the first race of the winter that there isn’t a chance it will be cancelled due to snow and ice.

How did you do Jill? I am sure you rocked it!!!
