Dr. Phoenyx Austin

FFFC:  Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Dr. PA:  Hi! My name is Dr. Phoenyx Austin and I’m the creator of Beauty&Body Protein, as well as a line of other healthy hair and body nutritional supplements for women. I’m also a Sports Medicine Specialist, Communications Consultant and the author of the best-selling natural haircare guide, If You Love It, It Will Grow.

FFFC:  How did you get started in fitness and working out?

Dr. PA:  Growing up I was a huge tomboy and very much into sports, so I would say that at the core, fitness is just who I am as a person and working out is just something I do regularly because I love it so much.

FFFC:  Why did you make fitness your career choice?  How?

Dr. PA:  When it comes to why I chose fitness as a career choice, the answer is pretty simple, and it all boils down to following my passion. I love fitness and I love getting other people, especially women, amped about things like exercise and healthy eating because I do believe that healthy living is the greatest expression of self-love there is. That said, when all is said and done I absolutely love what I do and I take great pleasure and pride in the fact that my job is literally to get other women excited and educated about things that will help better their lives – which are also things that I’m immensely passionate about. From exercising, to eating healthy, to loving and caring for your natural hair, my mission is to inspire, and educate, and lead by example – and honestly, I think I have the coolest job in the world!

FFFC:  How do you balance making time to get in your workouts with the demands of your career and personal life?

Dr. PA:  It’s really simple. I love working out, and my stance is that you should always make time for what you love. And really, it just comes down to prioritizing your life. Simply put, I don’t put time and energy into things that don’t make me healthy and happy. Plus, I’m very fortunate because I’ve created a career for myself that’s firmly based in fitness, so my workout time is literally built into my day to day schedule. All in all, as a health and fitness expert I do recognize that I am a role model to many women, and thus I do make it my responsibility to practice what I preach by leading a healthy lifestyle and staying in shape.

FFFC:  What do you like most about working out?

Dr. PA:  What I love most about working out is the way it makes me feel! Honestly, eexercise is like a drug to me. I’m totally addicted to it, and nothing gets me more “high” that a great workout – whether that workout is a leisurely walk at sunrise or a crazy intense jump rope workout later in the day. I just love the overall feeling I get from exercise.

FFFC:  What is your favorite exercise routine?

Dr. PA:  My favorite exercise is jumping rope, and I love sharing jump rope videos on my Youtube channel and Instagram!

*Here’s a link to one of my jump rope workout vids

FFFC:  What do you consider the most useful workout equipment?

Dr. PA:  Hands down, I think the jump rope is one of the most useful and underrated pieces of workout equipment. From calorie burn to the fact that you can literally do it anywhere, I could list so many reasons why jumping rope rocks and why I highly recommend it. Anyone who follows me on social media knows that I love jumping rope and it’s also a staple in my exercise protocol because the workout is so amazing. Plus, I love busting out cool jump rope tricks and moves from time to time just to show other people how much fun jumping rope can be.

FFFC: What do you think is the biggest misconception about this field and what you do?

Dr. PA:  The biggest misconception is that MD’s like myself wear white lab coats 24-7 and sit behind a desk in a clinic somewhere seeing patients all day. Yes, I’m an M.D. and a Sports Medicine Specialist, but I’ve also created a very unique career for myself that is definitely outside the “norm.” Basically, my job is to educate other women on how to live a healthy lifestyle through things like exercise, healthy eating, and I also enjoy sharing natural hair and beauty tips for active women like myself. In addition to that, as a Communications Consultant I also work with other major brands and organizations to develop fun and educational articles/videos to educate the general public about topics healthy living. All the above stated, when I stepped into the fitness, health and beauty arena, I knew that I wanted to do something different than the norm and bring lots of energy and my own unique style to the women’s healthy living space by showing others how ridiculously fun it can be to live healthy, active lifestyles – and that’s what I plan to keep doing!

FFFC:  What general tips do you have for the average woman trying to balance family, career with a fitness lifestyle?

Dr. PA:  Same as what I do – prioritize. Truth is, people waste a lot of time during the day doing things that don’t better their lives or get us closer to our goals. And when it comes to prioritizing a healthy lifestyle there’s a quote that I absolutely love that goes: Today is the youngest you will ever be. Live like it! And the reason why I love that quote so much is because it’s one of those quotes that really lights a fire under your butt because it’s so brutally honest and in your face. Every day that we live is a day we move away from our youth and closer to our end, so you better start living now and working towards your goals now before it’s too late.

FFFC:  What would you say is your biggest career accomplishment to date?

Dr. PA:  My two biggest accomplishments to date are publishing my first book in 2012 (If You Love, It Will Grow) and the recent launch of my line of Dr. Phoenyx brand women’s nutritional supplements. In the case of If You Love, It Will Grow I was so proud of the quality of information I was able to share with women who wanted to learn more about transitioning to and caring for natural hair from a healthy living standpoint and to have my book hit best-seller status within the same year that it was published was truly incredible and humbling. To add a little more icing to the cake, If You Love It, It Will Grow continues to be a bestseller on Amazon and in late 2015 I released my signature nutritional supplement, Beauty&Body Protein as well as 2 other amazing supplements for healthy hair and body. Overall, I do have many have things to be thankful for in my life and I have so much gratitude and appreciation for all the women that continue to support me, my books, and my products because they truly believe in what I do and appreciate that I’m so passionate and work extremely hard to provide a great wealth of information to the natural hair and healthy living community.

FFFC:  Who is your fitness inspiration?

Dr. PA:  Who’s my greatest fitness inspiration? Women!

Throughout my life and career I’ve been massively inspired by other women, and it’s so very rewarding to receive, in turn, such immense positivity and support from the same women that I also admire.
