Find out how Amina began and smashed her weight loss journey to live her very best and healthy fit life.
Please introduce yourself to our readers (i.e. your name, occupation, hobbies, etc.).
My name is Amina Barnes and over the past few years I’ve undergone a huge transformation. After years of yo-yo dieting and struggling with my weight I was finally able to make a real health changes in my life.
I’ve lost over 65 pounds, earned my personal training and nutrition certification as well as my Master’s in business and it’s now my mission to teach women all over the world how to lose weight, gain confidence, and live happier and healthier lives.
I’m currently creating my own virtual health programs for women that continue to struggle with their weight. I will educate them on the benefits of proper nutrition and exercise and truly living a healthy lifestyle.
I plan on launching my health programs in January 2019.
What sparked your weight-loss transformation journey?
In January of 2016 I had a miscarriage. I was at my lowest point ever. I knew if I didn’t do something to find a way out.
On my 30th birthday I made a promise to myself to finally make permanent healthy changes not only for me but for my family, for my daughter who deserved a happy and healthy mommy.
What was your beginning and current weight or measurements?
Beginning weight: 216 Current weight: 148
How long did it take for your weight-loss transformation from beginning to end?
Little over 2 years. February 2016- May 2018
Which physical activities did you participate in during your journey?
Kayla Itsine’s Bikini Body Guide, Circuit Training, Spin Class Instruction, Group Classes, Running 5 ks & 10 ks
How did your eating habits change?
I limited my sugar, grain and dairy intake and increased my vegetable, fruit and complex carbohydrate intake.
What do you typically eat for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner?
Breakfast:
Eggs, Avocado
Lunch:
Salad, Meat or poultry, Vegetables, Sweet Potato
Dinner:
Snacks:
Snacks are usually nuts, popcorn, fruit
What is your favorite fitness activity?
High Interval Circuit Training & Low Impact Steady State Cardio
What do you do now to maintain your physique?
Proper Nutrition and Moderate Exercise
How did you develop and sustain the willpower to avoid the bad stuff (i.e. junk food, bad drinks, lack of activity, etc.)?
It’s all about practice, and mindset. Changing your relationship with food and learning that being uncomfortable or trying something new is just apart of the journey. You have to be open to growth, not resistant.
What advice do you have for someone looking to get started with their fitness journey but not sure where to begin?
Take it slow. Start small with increased water intake, adding vegetables to your diet, walking a few times a week, then grow from there.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about this journey?
That there is a quick fix to weight loss. It is a life long journey full of twists and stalls and setbacks.
Staying consistent is the best thing you can do. You don’t have to be perfect you just have to try.
Do you have any fitness inspirations? Who are they?
My husband and daughter as well as my close friends and family. I want to be healthy and strong for them and set a good example.
All of the women I met on my fit journey who continue to inspire me and motivate me to keep going. And course the women I’m creating my own health programs for.
I can’t wait to be inspired and motivated by them as well.
