Please introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Candace and I am the founder of YogaByCandace, a yoga lifestyle company. We lead yoga retreats worldwide (our next one is in the jungle of Costa Rica next month!), have a popular yoga youtube channel, a free app on iTunes, a discovery box program called the YBC Mantra Box, a yoga forum, and just got a book deal!
How long have you been practicing yoga?
On and off for about fifteen years.
What advice do you have for someone new to yoga?
Let go off expectations for yourself, the class, and the teacher. The hardest part is just showing up, so once you do that, you’re golden.
Do you have a favorite yoga practice?
I do – it’s a very flowy, athletic practice detailed here.
Why did you create the YBC Mantra Box?
I love small business and I love natural products that support your practice both on and off the mat. As the YBC blog grew, I realized just how many small businesses out there were producing amazing, natural products and having a hard time getting the word out because it’s tough to get into places like Whole Foods, and advertising in big magazines is costly. I thought a subscription box type program might be useful to everyone – the readers would get to discover new favorite products from brands that we’ve vetted, and the small businesses get the word out there and their products in the hands of their target audience, and YBC gains another dimension to the business. So far, it’s been a huge success, and we have sold out every time (we just have a few left, so if you’re interested, order now while you still can!).
How did you come up with the name and what’s the significance?
Lauren Wotherspoon, YBC’s Marketing and Events Director, actually came up with the name initially. We thought it was catchy and we loved the idea of incorporating a specific mantra that people can incorporate into their practice and life. We know that sometimes practices get stale and our lives can feel sort of blah now and then, so the mantra serves as a little dose of inspiration for both.
What types of products are typically featured in the YBC Mantra Box?
People can choose from vegan/vegetarian boxes, Paleo/GAPS boxes, and “I eat all the foods!” and they can expect healthy snacks, yoga and fitness gear, natural beauty products, jewelry, essential oils, quality supplements, inspired stationery and much more.

How did you come up with the concept to feature primarily products from small business in the YBC Mantra Box?
My mom has always been in business for herself. My grandmother, too. Actually now that I think about it, nearly everyone on my mother’s side has been in business for themselves (and that’s a lot of people – my mom is one of twelve kids), and I grew up watching them hustle. Small business workers are inspiring, hard-working people, and being one myself, I wanted to help them using the platform I created.
What advice would you give someone who is on the fence about ordering a YBC Mantra Box?
Treat yo’self!
How can someone order a YBC Mantra Box?
The thing about small businesses is that they don’t have unlimited resources, so we only make 150 boxes available. People can click here to order if boxes are still available, or send an email to [email protected] to be emailed when the next one is available.
What exciting things and events does YogaByCandace have coming up?
We just got a book deal and will be focusing on that for the winter (the book comes out next fall!) and so our Costa Rica retreat next month (still a few spaces open!) will be our last event for a while. In March, we have some plans in the works for something fun in California but it’s hush hush right now. 🙂
