FFFC: Please introduce yourself to our readers (i.e. your name, occupation, hobbies, etc.).
SJ: Our names are Amy Serafin and Katie Guzman (Serafin) and we are partners as well as sisters. We began our company Serafin Juice this year, which we named after our family. As entrepreneurs we knew that the only way we would be motivated was to build a business that had a purposeful meaning and also gave back to others.
FFFC: What did you do before you began Serafin Juice?
SJ: We were both in technology sales but we couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to leave our jobs to do something more on our own.
FFFC: Why did you choose to build a business around juice?
SJ: We had always been fascinated around educating ourselves on health through natural remedies so when we stumbled upon juice it was something we couldn’t ignore. We found that people had been healing and curing themselves of sickness and diseases using organic cold pressed fruits and vegetables for years. Yet, the majority of the population didn’t know about it. We decided that we wanted to begin a business around getting juice to as many people as possible as quickly as possible. The knowledge of juicing was something we knew we had to share.
FFFC: Have you had any experiences where juice has healed you or a loved one?
SJ: Yes, my (Katie) husband Daniel actually underwent an emergency craniectomy in August of 2014 where they remove a portion of your skull and it is not replaced immediately but a few months later. They did this because there was so much swelling on the brain caused by an accident that it would be the only way for him to recover. Daniel had to wear a helmet everywhere he went to keep his brain protected since part of his skull was missing. The doctors said that in order to have the final surgery completed in which they would put his skull back on, the swelling in his brain would need to be reduced. They let us know that there was nothing we could do but wait.
After five months of waiting we took things into our own hands and cleaned up our diet. We started with a three day juice cleanse and were amazed by the results. Daniel’s swelling was drastically reduced in just three days so we decided to complete another three day juice cleanse right before his next doctor’s appointment. The juice cleanse worked more wonders and Daniel’s surgery was booked immediately. We feel incredibly lucky that we have this new knowledge of the power of juicing but we know that most people don’t. This story and Daniel’s results really push the passion for our company further and further each day.
FFFC: You mentioned before that you also want to give back to the community’s youth. How do you plan on doing this?
SJ: We have put a structure in place that for every ten juices we sell one juice will be donated to a child through one of our partners or directly into schools. We grew up on the standard American diet of high-fat dairy products, sugary drinks, and a high intake of processed meat, which makes it hard for us not to crave these foods now as adults. So we thought if we could get juice in the hands of children and let them see for themselves how great they feel when drinking juice, then they will learn what we know now but at a younger age. We hope that this will help them make better decisions about eating than we were able to.
FFFC: Who are your partners that you will be donating the juice to?
SJ: As of right now we are working with the Children’s Hunger Fund, Feeding America of San Diego, and Passion 4 K.I.D.S. We hope to partner with local schools as well so we can begin to incorporate juice into their cafeteria.
FFFC: How many juices will you have and what sizes are they?
SJ: We have fives juices and one almond milk that are all organic, Non-GMO, and vegan. Our juice line has something for everyone from a beginner to an every day juicer. The juices are all 8 ounces which drives down the higher cost that consumers are used to seeing as well as making our juice the perfect size for snacking between meals.
FFFC: Where can consumers purchase your juice?
SJ: We have a live crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo that allows you to purchase our juice as well as many other perks such as donating juice to children, learning more about juicing, and much, much more.
FFFC: Why did you begin a crowdfunding campaign?
SJ: We thought it would be an excellent platform to show everyone who we are as well as try to help fund our business goals. So far we have funded Serafin Juice completely on our own but to move forward as fast as we want there are many cost involved. We are looking to become USDA Organic certified, Non-GMO Project Verified, complete our FDA requirements, complete nutrition and shelf life analysis, etc.
FFFC: Where can readers find out more about your campaign?
SJ: You can visit our website www.serafinjuice.com which will currently direct you to our live campaign on Indiegogo where you can hear more about our story and watch our video.
