Meal Mondays: Farm Fresh Fit Meals by Homeshed Kitchens

Homeshed Kitchens

I don’t know about you but between workouts, family, work, etc. there is very little time to prepare nutritious meals that is satisfying.  Many times I try to cook on Sundays only to get maybe 2 dishes out of the effort that no one in my household wants to eat more than a single day.  I don’t know where these people are from because I ate left overs like nobody’s business.

So I can’t tell you how delighted I was when I found out about Homeshed Kitchens and their Farm Fresh Fit Meals.  They are located in Howard county in Maryland and deliver to Howard, Montgomery and Frederick counties.

Jeannette Warne had a vision when she created Homeshed Kitchens:

“We believe that there are intrinsic virtues in fostering the flow of food, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on.”

Jeannette, along with her team, created Farm Fresh Fit Meals as a way for busy individuals to eat healthy meals without worrying about food prepping.  They do all of the food prep for you.  How cool is that?

I tried one of their taste meals which consisted of raw almond, carrot coconut balls, acai berry breakfast bowl, baked chicken skewers with apple slaw, and beef stir fry.

My review:

First up let me tell you about the Acai Berry Breakfast Bowl.

AcaiBerryBreakfastBowl

I thought this bowl was a nice snack but it was not filling enough for breakfast.  I ate this after a rigorous weight training workout with my trainer.  Honestly I typically like eating something hot for breakfast and this is served cold.  You store it in the fridge and then remove and eat when ready.  The hempseeds gave it a nice nutty taste and the acai berries along with the blueberries really upped the antioxidant quotient but again, it was cold and I prefer something hot.  I ate it but needed something to chase it to feel more satiated.

I give the breakfast bowl a 5 out of 10.  If you like cereals in the morning this is a good replacement.  If you prefer hot food for breakfast, then you will be desiring something a little more filling.

Next up let’s talk about the Raw Almond Carrot Coconut Balls.

Raw Almond Carrot Coconut Balls

These snack balls were absolutely phenomenal.  You can eat these before a workout or run for quick energy.  These contain the obvious (check the name of the balls) including dates and coconut oil.  This wasn’t too sweet and the balls were perfect size for a single bite.  These were some of my favorite.  Healthy energy – can’t beat that.  Igive this snack 10 out of 10.

How about the Baked Chicken Skewers and Apple Slaw with Raisins and Pine Nuts?

Baked Chicken Skewers with Apple Slaw

WOW is all I can say about this dish.  They were very generous with the baked chicken breast chunks on the skewers and the fresh thyme gave it the right touch.  My favorite part of this dish was definitely the apple slaw.  The flavors just danced in my mouth.  Perfect combination of sweet, tart and crunch.  OH MY GOODNESS – this lunch dish was filling and definitely a winner.  I give this dish 10 out of 10.

Last but not least, let me talk to you about the Beef Stir Fry with Cashews.

Cashew Beef Stir Fry

I ate this dish after a tough 1-hour boot camp workout with Sanders Optimum Fitness.  I came home and heated this up in the oven on 400 degrees fahrenheit for 10 minutes.  I asked Jeannette about heating things up in the microwave and her position on this was the microwave breaks down the nutrition and nature of the food so heating up in the oven was preferred.  I followed her recommendation on this and everything was a perfect temperature after ten minutes.

This beef stir fry with cashews was perfection.  The vegetables were the right amount of crunch and not overcooked.  The beef was nice, tasty and tender and the entire dish was infused with the delicious flavor of ginger.  It wasn’t too salty – it was seasoned just right.  This was definitely what I needed after a tough boot camp workout.  I give this a 10 out of 10.

Pros:

  • No prep for you, all prep is on Homeshed Kitchens
  • They have a variety of healthy food options
  • Their nutritionist couples the right food and macros together for you taking out the guess work
  • The meals I tasted were absolutely delicious
  • It is extremely convenient  as they deliver to your gym or workout location on a schedule

Cons:

  • Currently they only deliver in Howard, Montgomery and Frederick counties (they are looking to branch out into Baltimore County)

Summary:

Overall  the meals and add-on snack I tried were phenomenal.  It felt good not having to worry about buying or picking up lunch or worrying about dinner.  You don’t realize how much of a relief that is until you don’t have to worry about it.  If you are a busy person who is conscientious about healthy and clean eating, then this service just might be what you have been looking for.  Check out their website for details at:  http://homeshedkitchens.com/farm-fresh-fit/ on pricing and meal plans.

Yum!! I would probably like that acai bowl, but maybe add some eggs or something to bulk up the protein. 🙂

Sounds like a really great service. On the breakfast: for a quick protein breakfast, I like to scramble an egg in a small custard dish with a TBSP milk and TBSP cheese and stick in the microwave for a minute. Quick, easy and hot! I usually have a piece of fruit as well.
