Depending on the time of year you may find yourself running in the dark.  Whether it be early morning or evening, be sure to keep these running essentials on hand to stay safe.

I enjoy running but the only time I really have time to run outdoors is early in the morning before the sun rises in the dark.

I have been running in the dark for years without the right equipment which isn’t safe so let me share some key essentials everyone needs for running in the dark.

Don’t make the same mistakes I’ve made.  It could cost you your life.

Run with friends

I wouldn’t recommend running in the dark alone outside.  It’s a safety issue in particular for women.

Not just from being mugged or worse, but if you fall out or start having health trouble it is smart to have someone with you who can assist you.

Also there’s safety in numbers.

Be seen running

Drivers are out all throughout the morning, day and night.  When drivers are driving in the dark, even with headlights runners can be difficult to see.

Especially if wearing dark colored running clothes.  To solve this issue be sure to run with reflectors on or with lights.

I’ve personally used knuckle lights and the GoVivo Reflective Vest.  It’s excellent because when the car’s headlights hit on the vest the driver can easily see the person ahead of him/her walking or running and can avoid them.

Protect yourself running

Run with mace or some other self defense mechanism to ward off any possible attacks.

I have mace which I carry with me and have not had to use it ever but better safe than sorry.  The GoVivo Running Belt is excellent to hold your mace, keys and phone comfortably.

At least that is what I run with and it has enough space to hold all of those items.

I demonstrate how to put on the GoVivo Reflective Vest and Running Belt.  Check it out.

I prefer early morning when it’s still dark and have to be attentive either the traffic, bikes, or joggers.

I love early morning walk/jogs but my son’s school now starts at 7 a.m. so we cut it close getting everything done with just getting out of bed at 5! I’m hoping when time changes I’ll keep getting up at 5, which will be 4, which will give me an extra hour to work out!

If I had my choice, my ideal running time would be like 8am lol. Since that doesn’t always work out I’m usually a 5am runner with my friends. We wear headlamps and reflective gear so I’m usually not too worried. I should carry mace though, i always forget it.

Evening — not so much by choice, as that the only time I have to run is after the kids are tucked in and my husband’s home to watch them.

Early morning before my hubs and the kids are up is my best time for running! Either that, or I’m out with the double jogger later that day 🙂
