My Favorite Sport – Boxing

Boxing Greats

I love boxing. As early as I can remember I was fascinated with professional boxing. Football, baseball, soccer or basketball can’t hold a candle to boxing in my opinion. I think part of my love for the sport is being exposed to it as early as I can remember (age 4 or 5).   I am a child of the 70’s so I remember the heavy weight bouts and the famous names associated with them:

  1. Muhammad Ali
  2. George Foreman
  3. Joe Frazier
  4. Larry Holmes
  5. Ken Norton

Just to name a few. On the television it looks easy, but it is amazing and fascinating how the athletes work hard to play offense and defense. Build points as well as protect their own chins. Knock outs were never easy to watch and for many, their coaches and fight promoters were just as flamboyant as the boxer himself (can you say Don King).

I recall being allowed to stay up late to watch the famous bouts that were never short of excitement. The footwork, the knock outs, the 10 counts, jab, hook, uppercut, “get off the ropes”……I get excited all over again just thinking about it.

I am still a boxing fan to this day even though I have never attended a live boxing match in Las Vegas, Atlantic City or anywhere but I remain an avid fan. Women have not left this sport just to men. There are some awesome women in the game near past and present. Let’s run’em down:

  1. Laila Ali
  2. Christy Martin

As you can see my list of female boxers is much shorter and that’s because I rarely watch a women’s boxing match. But no worries, I have a “Women Who Box” series spinning up very soon of some current female boxers who are making it happen as athletes and showing how women can showcase their power in this amazing sport. Stay tuned for that and even subscribe to this blog so you don’t miss it. J

What is your favorite sport? Who are your favorite athletes in that sport?

I’ve never been to a boxing match but I did meet Mann P last summer and held his belt. fun! I do love kickboxing workouts and they are so much tougher than they look. Right now I am doing it once a week with my trainer-best sweat ever!

Kickboxing is no joke!!!! We have a Pynchon bag downstairs and I hit I. It for three minutes and I was exhausted and it didn’t hit back. Imagine!

Did you ever find someone to feature? I loved when I boxed and would love to get back into it again! I almost was roped into doing the MMA training but I just loved boxing so much more! Never did it outside of just training, but I did have an offer to 😀 fun stuff and I love this because it’s a different sport you hardly hear about! Good one!

I honestly have never been much of a boxing fan. However, I do love it when I am doing my Shaun T Focus T25 workouts and he breaks into some kickboxing moves. Whew are those some calorie burners #wowlinkup

It is a violent sport so I understand not many people being attracted to it.

That’s cool that you enjoy watching boxing! I’ve never watched a single match, lol. I love that there are women like Laila Ali paving the way for more women to take it on. I know it must take a lot of skill and speed to be a champ!

I don’t really know if I have a favorite sport – we watch a lot of football here and go to the high school games (son in band) so I guess it would be football. We watch a lot of baseball, too. Boxing is okay but I am with the others – I really like kickboxing. I own some really good Cathe Friedrich kickboxing workouts that I like to do.

    Hi Diatta,
I love your #wowlinkup post on boxing. I too grew up with parents who enjoyed watching boxing matches and my husband loves it too. I have also considered trying out boxing as a workout option. It’s on my bucket list for now.

Favourite sport is running, but boxing, kickboxing, and crossfit are all things I want to get into but don’t know where or how to start! I once took a boxing class and my arms were so sore the next day, it was good. I think my abs were sore too–and this is coming from the girl who has the best core strength (possibly) in my entire city! Seriously!, pilates made me that strong but kickboxing made it so intense I was SORE.

I love boxing too! I’ve been doing thai boxing for about 18 years but also trained straight boxing for a few years. It’s so strategical sport.

I always thought it would be so fun (and challenging) to take a boxing class. I used to watch boxing with my dad back in the day, and I was always amazed by how fit the boxers were.

I had to take boxing for one semester during college. It was tough! You are exhausting yourself and someone is beating you up, lol. Seriously though, even just bobbing around and staying on your toes is workout enough. #wowlinkup

Did you see the fight this past week-end? Boxing is a great sport and an excellent way to get in shape. If there is a class near my house, I might try to taking a class next summer. #wowlinkup

I love taking kick boxing classes, but haven’t done so in a while. None ever quite compared to the classes at my college! Running is my favorite sport 🙂 Nothing like it! Looking forward to hearing more about your favorite female boxers #wowlinkup
