In an article published by Harvard Health Publishing, there are quite a number of simple actions one can take in order to enjoy a longer and more satisfying life span.

Within your control are some major factors that can help you live longer and healthier:

  • Do not smoke;
  • Maintain a healthy weight and body shape;
  • Enjoy physical and mental activities daily;
  • Eat healthy diets;
  • Challenge your mind by learning and trying out new things; and
  • Follow preventive care and screening guidelines.

The key to longevity is to keep your mind and body fit. As an individual, enjoying an active and rewarding life is mainly your responsibility.

New research has revealed that exercising regularly combined with going on a Mediterranean-style diet can increase life span. When you get the heart pumping, you tend to enjoy a far more fulfilling and active life.

As a matter of fact, those who participate in physical activity usually live longer than those who are sedentary or inactive.

Both young and old people need to be actively involved in keeping their mind and body fit, which can be achieved by jogging and eating Mediterranean diet.

Jogging

According to Science Daily, jogging is a form of trotting or running at a slow or leisurely pace. Going for a leisurely jog a few times per week at a moderate pace ensures better health rather than engaging in strenuous running that puts additional stress on the cardiovascular system and joints.

Research shows intensive jogging confers less longevity than light jogging. In a study by a team from Denmark, it was concluded that there may be an upper limit to jogging, after which the benefits fall off.

Benefits of Jogging

Regular jogging is a weight-bearing exercise with a lot of health benefits. Basically, it helps to strengthen the muscles, build stronger bones, improve cardiovascular fitness, reduce blood pressure, and maintain a healthy weight.

This convenient leisure-time physical activity also helps in reducing the risk of heart diseases and boosting mental health. It improves mood, reduces stress, boosts intelligence and rational thinking, improves memory, and helps with addictions.

The Mediterranean Diet

Diet is also important in securing longevity. The kind of food you eat determines how you look and function, whether or not you sleep well at night, and your weight.

More so, your chosen diet will determine whether the effect of aging in your body will speed up, and your brain’s energy source.

Identified as the #1 Best Overall Diet in U.S. News of January 2019, the Mediterranean Diet has a history and tradition that comes from the social patterns of eating culture of regions around Spain, Turkey, Italy, and Greece.

This is why some people regard it as a life-long way of eating. Beyond being a tasty way to eat, drink, and also live, the Mediterranean diet is a sustainable and realistic way to maintain a healthy weight while reducing inflammation caused by diseases.

Basically, this eating pattern is high in fiber found in fruits and vegetables, high quality fats, and moderate proteins. Here is a list of some of the components of a typical Mediterranean diet:

  • fresh fruits and vegetables
  • nuts and seeds
  • peas
  • herbs and spices
  • healthy fats like olive oil
  • wild-caught fish and seafood
  • unrefined/whole grains
  • legumes and beans
  • tea or coffee
  • a lot of fresh water
  • a daily glass of red wine

Benefits of The Mediterranean Diet

This absolutely healthy diet has a lot of health benefits, all of which promote longevity. Research shows that the Mediterranean Diet protects against heart disease, depression, strokes, obesity, type-2 diabetes, cancer, dementia, metabolic complications, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

The Mediterranean Diet is low in processed foods and sugars so it encourages healthy weight reduction and management. In addition, it boosts the functioning of the brain and may also help protect telomeres, which is responsible for aging.

Some other benefits of this diet include mood enhancement, reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, as well as general disease prevention. In a nutshell, this life-long way of eating and living is known for boosting health and longevity.

To Wrap Things Up

According to John Hopkins researchers, people who made certain healthy choices reduced their risks significantly. There are many variables that determine how long you live, how active you will be, and how you turn out in your later years.

Diet and exercise play significant roles in ensuring longevity.

Jogging, which on its own has a lot of mortality benefits, is not enough. Jogging, combined with a Mediterranean-style Diet, can increase health and lifespan faster than anything else.

In conclusion, engaging in, and sticking to, a good jogging and Mediterranean Diet routine can increase the opportunity for living a very long and active life.

    I totally agree with you. The Mediterranean diet made all the difference for my dad who has diabetes. While he doesn’t jog, the doc told him to brisk walk 30 minutes daily.
