Sometimes, these are found to be useless too. There are many reasons that may result in increasing weight gain and may not allow us to shed them completely. It is important to recognize such reasons and work accordingly along with a control on the diet and the exercises.

Have you been working tirelessly to lose weight? Let us see a few surprising reasons why you may not be losing those extra pounds although you have been working so hard.

Inadequate amount of sleep prevents you from losing weight

It is true that when you want to burn fat, you need to keep yourself active. But, the body also needs adequate amounts of sleep.

While you are sleeping, your muscles get enough time to repair. Lack of sleep causes one to feel fatigue and forces you to give in for your cravings.

It results in an increase in appetite and therefore increases the amount of food you eat. Sleeping less also gives rise in the stress hormone cortisol that is also a major cause for weight gain.

Compensation of the exercise

You may be working hard for hours in the gym. Working out and sweating for hours is something good and you may see that you are burning mega calories.

But, what do you do after that?

Usually people want to eat something afterwards. Here is where you might go wrong.

Eating equal or exceeding amounts of calories you burned will not have you in a deficit but possibly a surplus.  A surplus equals weight gain!

This will simply nullify the efforts that you put in to lose those calories. Be mindful of how many calories you eat after a workout.

Larger portions of food prevent you from losing weight

Many people complain of not seeing proper results although they follow a healthy diet routine that comprises of nutritional foods.  They include healthy amounts of all 3 macros in their meals throughout the day.

Combined with exercise that burns less calories, you will gain weight.

You need to check the portion size of the food that you are consuming.

Even if the food is considered “healthy” it must be consumed in the correct amounts.  The calories will add up if you are eating large portions throughout the day.

A medical condition prevents you from losing weight

There are a lot of illnesses that may cause weight gain and make it harder at losing weight.  If this is the case you may need to balance diet and exercise with the medications you are taking.

Chronic conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Thyroid problems, Menopause and various hormonal imbalances can be major causes of weight gain for women.

If you have observed a sudden gain in weight or slow or negligible weight loss, you should get yourself checked to see whether your body is dealing with any of these medical issues.

The weight does not determine body fat

People are usually mistaken that the reduction in weight shows the amount of fat loss that has taken place. This is not true. The total weight of the body represents the weight of the muscles, bones, fat, etc. You cannot consider the loss of weight as the amount of fat that is lost. The best way to determine whether fat is lost is by checking the measurements of your clothes and the way they fit you.

The entire process to lose weight is in fact a mysterious one. You may never know the exact reason for weight loss or even weight gain.

With the introduction of various technologies and techniques in the medical industry, it has now become easy to detect some approximate causes of weight gain.

Weight loss is simply a fight that we need to fight courageously against the illnesses that may come our way.  Proper food with adequate amounts of exercise and sleep along with the necessary medication that may be needed will help in a considerable weight loss.

If you follow a regimen that best suits your body type and the internal conditions, you are sure to see the results soon!

I see a lot of my friends packing on the pounds now that we’re all getting older. I think a lot of it has to do with a slowing metabolism, insulin resistance and a lot of carbs…

And I think some folks overestimate the amount of calories they are burning in their workouts too! Good information.
